- REGISTERING DEFLATE AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ==============================================
- Deflate is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
- register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
- personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
- following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for
- more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
- also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING DEFLATE
- ==============
- • If you use Deflate, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
- information in the above section on registration.
-
- What Does Deflate Do?
- --------------------
- • Deflate, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Box) that can also be used with System
- 6.0.X, removes help resources from any file. It can be set to delete just the
- help resources, or the resources and the data that they indicate. So you
- can free up all that space help was taking up.
-
- Using Deflate
- ------------
- • Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
- style”. Deflate will scan folders and disks provided, and will
- modify all files no matter what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple
- Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.
-
- • You can also double-click on the application and select files to Deflate
- through a standard open file dialog. In this way, Deflate is compatible with
- System 6.0.X. Double-clicking also gives you access to the Preferences and
- About dialogs.
-
- • If you drop an alias directly into Deflate (not inside a directory), the Finder
- will resolve it and Deflate will think that you’re dropping in the target
- (parent) file, folder, or disk.
-
- • PLEASE see “Help Resources,” below, to see what Deflate can do
- (good and bad).
-
- • ALWAYS WORK ON A COPY. Nuff said.
-
- • Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
- a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Portions of files already
- processed will remain modified.
-
- Preferences
- -----------
- • The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
- dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
- set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don’t want to see that
- window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
- Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything. The
- preferences apply ONLY to Drop Box mode. They are not consulted when in
- Manual mode.
-
- • The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
- alert before modifying anything. You can also select what resources you
- wish to delete. See the section, “Help Resources,” below, to determine what
- resources you should delete.
-
- • To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
- option key while the program is launching.
-
- • To bypass the show alert preference (and therefore not show the alert),
- hold down the shift key while the program is launching (or when hitting
- the OK button if you show the preferences button by holding down option).
-
- Help Resources
- --------------
- • Help resources indicate what data resources (strings, pictures, text) should
- be used in a help balloon for a given item. Choosing to delete only the help
- resources leaves these data resources intact. Thus, if a program depends on,
- say, a string list resource for all its error messages AND help messages (it
- really shouldn’t, but it happens), the string list (and all other data resources)
- should be left behind.
-
- • Associated (or data) resources (see above for description) can be removed if
- you know that they are not otherwise required by the target program. Obvious
- problems arise if a required error message was encoded within a help string
- list that you deleted when you Deflated the program.
-
- • Programs don’t usually encode error (or other) messages with help messages,
- or use a text resource for both a help message and an alert message, so you
- can probably assume that in most cases you are safe deleting all the help
- and associated resources. But remember to work on a COPY. In fact, ALWAYS
- keep a copy of all modified software. I’m sure you’ve heard this before.
-
- USING DROP BOXES
- =================
- Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
- of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
- icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
- The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
- You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
- just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
- combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
- files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
- directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
- directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
- and thus their target (parent) is modified.
